The Icelandic Parliament, known as Althingi, was founded there at Thingvellir National Park in 930.
As a result, it is not only the oldest organisation in Iceland but also the oldest continuously operating parliament worldwide.
Althingi was originally an outdoor assembly conducted in Thingvellir, even though it is now housed in a typical 19th-century structure. The most influential figures in Iceland travelled there to administer justice and make laws. The assemblies were the biggest social gathering of the year, attracting guests from all over the nation because all free males were permitted to participate.
Iceland was under the jurisdiction of the Norwegian king Hakan Hakonarson as the period of the commonwealth ended in 1262. Despite this, the majority of the Norwegian king's deputies were Icelanders, and Norwegian law had to be ratified by the Althingi. Iceland, on the other hand, joined the union when Norway and Denmark joined forces, remaining there until 1944 while being ruled by the Danish king. Althingi was no longer able to enact laws because they came directly from Denmark while it was still a monarchy in Denmark. Althingi persisted, although it now served as a court of law.
However, Icelanders insisted on having their assembly, and the monarch eventually agreed to a consultative parliament. As a result, Althingi was reinstated in 1843. Following elections in 1844, Althingi reconvened in July 1845. Following the Danish example, only men with significant financial resources who were at least 25 years old were granted the right to vote.
Over 12,000 women, more than half of whom were over 25, signed a petition advocating for universal suffrage in 1907, and after a protracted battle, women won the right to vote in 1915.Iceland is a little island country in Europe.
